Fabric, Floss, and Yarn

Judi designs and then creates her own original needlework designs. The possibilities are endless: counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, quilting, knitting, and on and on. Most of her designs feature Newfs, but she ranges further afield if requested. Here are a very few examples of the many designs she has created.

Quilted cotton calico dog bowl mats, personalized with the dogs’ names. The fabrics were carefully chosen to match the owners’ kitchen décor, as well as to reflect the dogs’ individual personalities.

Judi will paint a portrait of your own dog, or create a Newfoundland scene, on your favorite jeans jacket (or sweatshirt, dress, duffel bag, etc.). The painted sections can be safely machine-washed and dried, and will stay beautiful for years and years.

Judi created this light-hearted design for a customer who was a musical freestyle enthusiast. The client had requested a “happy trio of dancing Landseers. Judi hand-painted the design onto an aqua t-shirt that the woman wore when she and her dog performed for the public.

Framed 8x10 needlepoint trophies, worked in colorful worsted yarn. These were designed and created by Judi for a special Canadian obedience trial, and they were awarded to good-working Newfs and their very lucky owners. One went to the highest scoring Newf who already had a tracking title, one to the highest scoring Newf with a water title, and so on.

Judi used counted cross-stitch to create this intricate, old-fashioned 16x20 sampler. It was given as a gift to special friends. It is intensely personalized. The snow scene features the owners’ house and barn, and it depicts the owners skiing with their three Newfs for company. The folk-art style and muted colors are a perfect match for the owners’ ski-lodge-like cabin in the mountains.

This lap quilt features the fabric version of old-fashioned “black-paper” cut-out silhouettes. Each hand-embroidered silhouette is a specific Newfoundland: the four dogs the family has owned over a twenty year time-span. The center panel is an appliqued scene of the husband and wife and their current Newf, enjoying a day in the countryside. The blue tones in the denim and chambray strips and corner squares enhance the peaceful feeling.

A custom-designed Newfoundland lap quilt, with red and green log cabin blocks. At the center, a silhouette of the purchaser’s much-loved Newfoundland. The hand-painted corner cotton insets feature various Newfie scenes: in the snow, at the beach, at home. The quilt is machine washable and dryable, and will get more beautiful with each passing year.

A sentimental owner – aren’t we all? – wanted a way to commemorate her thirty years with Newfoundlands. She wanted to commemorate each of her dogs over the years – those currently living and those who had passed away – as well as the ones that would come in the future. The design needed to blend with her hundred-year-old home. But her main request was that the creations be useful. She most definitely did not want something to just hang on the walls. (She is an artist – a weaver - and her house is filled with various pieces of wall art, literally wall-to-wall.) Soft stuffed calico patchwork pillows, tea-dyed (for that antique look) and designed in a grade-school-primer style, with each dog’s name and silhouette embroidered on the front, was the perfect choice. Each dog’s pillow is individual, with its own color scheme and design.
