Snippets

This is a cheery, delightful soft-cover book containing hundreds of small bits of humor about Newfoundlands and other dog-related subjects, inspired by Judi’s ten years of columns for CRNC News, a regional Newfoundland club newsletter.

Snippets can perhaps best be described as "If Dave Barry or Erma Bombeck wrote about dogs, only zippier. With an occasional atrocious pun thrown in for good measure."

The book has over 100 illustrations. Snippets is the perfect little book for gift-giving. Or for yourself, when you need a lift.

The following is a brief sample from the Breeding chapter:

Our Newfoundland Coventry is in season, and we've had a steady parade of the neighborhood lotharios sitting hopefully outside our gate. They don't come around for our other females, but there's something about Covy that they can't resist. I considered the possibility of putting her on a medication our veterinarian suggested to mask her apparently wonderful odor, but then he told me what the cost was, and I decided to forgo the idea. Believe me, it was nothing to sniff at.

The phone rang. Hello, said I. The caller began in a rush. "I'm calling from North Carolina and I want a Newfoundland and I've never had one before but they're just the cutest dogs and I love their personality and I really want one and I've wanted one ever since I saw one on TV last week and this guy I know in Raleigh told me you breed them and you have puppies for sale and I'd really like one because I think they're so cool and we live by a lake and I want him to swim with me and I used to have a lab but he died when the neighbors poisoned him and they tell me that a Newf is a lot like a lab except that it’s a lot hairier but that doesn’t bother me because I think it would be fun to groom a dog, I always wanted to be a beautician so this would be okay, and anyway I think long haired dogs are a lot cooler looking than short haired dogs ..."

Ten minutes later, when she finally caught her breath, it was all too obvious that while some people hold a conversation, others never let go!

I have a passion for notes. I write everything down, never knowing when a bit of information will come in handy. I take especially good notes whenever we do a breeding. I jot down the bitch's schedule (when she came in, day to day changes, when she appeared receptive, etc.). And I write down the male's attitude and degree of participation. We've now got a twenty-year collection of breeding notes that come in very handy.

Some dogs have their own peculiarities. Addie always bred (and took) on day #5. Covy always was happy to breed very early in her cycle, but didn't ovulate until day #16 or 17.

The males also had their own quirks. We learned early on not to feed the boys just before doing a breeding, or in the excitement of the moment, all that wonderful dinner would urp up back on the floor. But they sure were eager to chow down immediately after the breeding was over. They had this raving appetite, this insatiable craving for Tie Food.

You know, you can never win when you breed dogs. The best you can hope for is a tie.
