Sweetbay’s Champions

Sweetbay is known for its working dogs, dogs who excel in obedience, tracking, draft, water rescue, and agility. But we have produced many champions as well. Showing a dog to his championship is a very different form of commitment from teaching him good manners, or giving the neighborhood children cart rides. But many Sweetbay owners do decide to give the breed ring a try. And just about every one has done his own handling. These are first and foremost family dogs, and conformation becomes a family affair rather than a professional activity.

VN AmCanCh Sweetbay’s Jason AmCanCD AmCanTD WRD DD, OFA NF-1379T

Jason loved every aspect of dog sports. He was an impressive obedience dog, a dedicated tracker, a powerful water dog, and an energetic carter. And he lovedthe breed ring. Crowds turned him on, and he thrived on the energy and chaos. The bigger the show, and the more competition in the ring with him, the happier he was.

VN Ch Sweetbay’s Bonne Amie CDX CanCD TD WRD DD, OFA NF-826

Amie did everything during her lifetime: water work, tracking, obedience, draft. And the breed ring. First time Newf owner Pam Mohr handled Amie to the championship herself, both of them learning as they went along. They had a wonderful time together, and Amie always approached the show grounds with a big grin and a wagging tail. Which was pretty much how she approached all of life!

CanCh Sweetbay’s Gideon CD CanCDX WRD CanWRDX AmCanDD

Gideon’s owner, Bonnie Fergusson, lives in British Columbia, so Gideon’s show career was a Canadian one. He finished his championship easily, then went on to other things. For instance, pulling Bonnie’s children to school via sled on those days when the snow made car travel impossible.

Ch Sweetbay’s Jordan CD WRD, OFA NF-902T

No one who saw Jordan ever forgot him. Back in 1982, when Newfoundlands were not all that huge, Jordan towered over the other dogs in the breed ring. He was broad as well as tall, powerful and muscled, and yet he was sweet and gentle at all times. He was an effortless mover, whether it was circling a breed ring or racing over a 200 acre field. He loved the water, and more than once he went into the breed ring pretty much straight out of the river. A quick run-through with the slicker brush, and he was ready to go!

Jimmy is a recent Sweetbay champion. His good looks and joie de vivre made him a standout in the breed ring.
